Orchard Project Releases Version 0.8

What is Orchard, you ask? Let’s go to the source: “Orchard is a free, open source, community-focused project aimed at delivering applications and reusable components on the ASP.NET platform.”

Basically, they’re looking to provide a platform for developers to easily utilize .NET and CMS applications for web development. The components of Orchard will allow for current and future extensions and themes to be easily incorporated, and will give app authors components they can build on.

With the release of 0.8, the project is officially underway. The theme engine included, based on Razor syntax, includes a template system for rendering shapes, as well as a default theme named “The Theme Machine.”

Other features include widget support in the form of configurable UI and support for various layout and zones. Bradley Millington describes in more detail in his blog, “for designers, this offers the flexibility to either brand individual sites or create reusable themes to be shared with others. Orchard 0.8 also includes support for packaging themes and publishing them to an online gallery feed where other users can discover and download them.”
